When Madeline needed a building contractor to work on her Southboro home, she thought the process would be simple. “You see Angie’s List commercials on TV roughly every other second,” she said, “so I thought I’d just go there, look at some reviews, and easy as pie, have a Southboro building contractor I could trust.”
Trust turned out to be the key issue for Madeline, who was dismayed by reports that Angie’s List accepts advertising on their sites. Angie’s List makes up to 70% of its revenue from building professionals who advertise on the site. The potential conflict of interest is obvious. “Angie’s List says that they only allow contractors who are rated an A or a B to run ads,” Madeline said. “But let’s think this through. If a contractor is rated a C, there’s no advertising dollars coming from them. Angie’s List has an incentive to make sure that that contractor rates at least a B so they can capture those advertising dollars!”
Rather than spend her money on Angie’s List, Madeline decided to pursue her search for a Southboro building contractor the old-fashioned way. “I talked to people in my neighborhood and nearby who had had work done on their homes and asked them who they used. When I gathered up a few names, I checked with the Better Business Bureau as well as the free online review sites. Then I interviewed a few of the most likely candidates, and based on that meeting, made my decision.” She smiled. “I guess there’s just no substitute for doing the legwork yourself.”
