2013 is the year for smart, storage-savvy home renovations. As the home renovation specialists for MetroWest MA, we’re seeing more and more home owners coming to us with two specific needs: more living space for their families to enjoy, and smart, strategic storage areas for all of their things. The two needs don’t have to be incompatible!
Let’s talk about home renovations that result in more storage space. Traditional options, such as building or enlarging a garage, adding outbuildings, or finishing the basement or attic, all work very well for providing additional storage area. Other emerging options include using previous underutilized areas in the home for storage. This includes installing cabinetry or closet units high in the room, above the areas where the family does its active living. These spaces are often underutilized, and have the additional benefit of being warm and dry – ideal conditions for storing items like off-season clothing, sports equipment, and holiday decorations.
Built in storage is also an increasingly popular option chosen by Holliston homeowners. Window seats, breakfast nooks, and other cozy, comfortable spots can be built to incorporate easy-to-access convenient storage areas underneath the seating area. Narrow profile closets and cabinetry is another rapidly emerging trend. Strongly influenced by what we see throughout Asia, where space is at a premium, we’ve found that narrow cabinetry works best when it is also relatively shallow: build these units too deep, and you’ll find items disappearing into the hard-to-access depths never to be seen again.
One of the benefits of working with an experienced design/build contractor is that we’ve been doing this long enough to see how trends translate into actual livable reality. Sometimes the ideas that look great in the pictures of a magazine turn out to be tricky to live with. Our goal and focus is always your family’s comfort: talk to us about how you can have great storage areas built into your home today!
