Max M., of Waban, is exactly 10 months older than his sister Madison. The two of them have been sharing a room since birth, but now that Max is heading to kindergarten, he is refusing to sleep in the bedroom any more. “It’s turned into a battle every night,” Max’s mother Dawn said. “I tuck him in, we read the story, the whole bit, and then 15 minutes later, he’s out in the living room with his pillow and blanket.”
Children aren’t shy about letting you know when they need their own space. There are several options available to the Waban homeowner who need room for everyone to sleep comfortably. “My first thought was that we could have our building contractor build a partition wall down the center of the kids’ room,” Dawn said. “But that really wouldn’t leave either of them with enough usable space.”
Another option was having the Waban building contractor take out some interior walls, ‘stealing space’ from the family room to create two larger bedrooms instead of one smaller one. This type of home renovation is very cost effective, and doesn’t require changing the building’s footprint. “We considered that very seriously for a while,” Dawn said, “but eventually my husband and I decided that what we wanted was an addition.”
The family had their Waban building contractor add a 10X20′ addition; large enough to accommodate a bedroom for Max and some much needed space in the form of a utility/laundry/storage area. “Max really loves his room,” Dawn said with a laugh, “But I think I love having a designated area for the laundry and storing the strollers and all of the kids’ stuff even more!”
